Materials and Nanomaterials

(a) Preparation of materials

The SYNCHIMIA can provide organic materials (
conjugated polymers) for electronics and photonics and also any intermediate for their preparation. These materials are active components in a variety of devices (waveguides, organic light emitting diodes, photovoltaic cells etc...) A series of representative structures is shown in the materials section of the website. The SYNCHIMIA staff will be happy to consider any structural changes to the reported molecules.



SYNCHIMIA provides also nanomaterials with special reference to titania nanoparticles.

(b) Devices

The access to a wide park of SYNCHIMIA instrumentation allows the Synchimia staff to provide customers with a rather unique and highly innovative service. Our spin off company in the short term will be able to build devices such as OLED and organic solar cells with materials supplied by SYNCHIMIA and / or by researchers who wish to evaluate their products in terms of application. Obviously, the operation will be performed under a research contract protected by a secrecy agreement.

Chiral Non-Racemic Compounds

Bioactive substances with potential applications in the pharmaceutical area very often are chiral. and non-racemic  Production of this type of molecules requires appropriate technical and operational procedures for asymmetric synthesis or resolution.

SYNCHIMIA researchers have a long and internationally well-recognized experience in such a field. This know-how is very useful in the design of new chiral molecules and for performing  studies on structure-activity relationhip.

Furthermore, SYNCHIMIA has considerable experience in the synthesis of chiral ligands with special reference to nitrogen bases structurally related to the Betti base.

Mario Betti (1875-1942) was professor of chemistry at several Italian universities and also senator of the Kingdom of Italy. He can be considered a pioner of asymmetric synthesis. The base and the multicomponent reaction bearing his name are well known in the field.


The compounds listed in the summary section of this website can be easily prepared enantiomerically pure on a multigram scale and, in some cases, on the scale of the kilogram (and even beyond).

Heterocyclic Compounds

In many applyed fields special interest attaches to heterocyclic compounds. Several partecipants in the Spin off venture have set up novel organometallic metodologies that permits the production of a wide series of heterocyclic architectural motifs. A selction of these structures can be seen in the website.

 
Biocatalyzed Reactions

SYNCHIMIA is able to develop:

a)      low-cost processes for the resolution of racemic mixtures, performed in the presence of lipase-protease or, more generally, free or immobilized hydrolases.

b)     "green chemistry" studies applied to the production of molecules with high added value through the optimization of experimental models of fermentation processes involving non-food biomass  for the production of bio-fuels such as bio-ethanol or more complex organic compounds.

PHEROMONE TRAPS

Pheromones are substances produced by glands of insects. They represents a chemical message that, when received from another member of the same species, causes a reaction.
The sex pheromones released into the atmosphere by female insects are an essential element in their reproduction. The sex pheromones produced by organic synthesis are used to build traps that are used in pest control. SYNCHIMIA synthesizes a series of pheromones. for monitoring,   massive capture and lure and kill techniques. Some of the pheromones prepared can be viewed in the section of this website. It is worth noting that the structures include the sex pheromone of Scrobipalpuloides absoluta (or Tuta absoluta) that is causing high damage to tomato crops in various countries.
